Eagle-eyed readers will have noticed that I recently started a new full-time position as Head of Data Insights at TransitionZero, a non-profit climate analytics start-up. I’ll be using their open-source datasets and tools to tell original stories about the economics of decarbonisation, with a focus on emerging Asia and Africa.
I’m excited to be working with their hugely talented team of data scientists, energy systems modellers and tech experts. I’ll be standing on the shoulders of giants to craft compelling narratives around power sector fuel switching, coal plant retirements and decarbonisation pathways for heavy industries.
TransitionZero has big plans. They are creating high-frequency, granular datasets and accessible user interfaces to inform business and policy decisions. Their mission is to improve data transparency to reshape the trajectory of energy systems change. There are many exciting projects in the pipeline that I can’t wait to get stuck into. And there will be lots of data vis 🤓
Energy Flux will continue – plans are afoot to integrate this newsletter into my new role. I see huge potential to supercharge the publication with TransitionZero’s unrivalled data modelling capabilities, while honing my data visualisation skills.
The urgency of this moment in global history, and the profound complexities of the energy-climate-socio-political nexus, call for bold and honest independent storytelling underpinned by robust real-world data. We have a shared vision to make that happen, and I’m all fired up to make Energy Flux a part of it.
We are aligned on the need to preserve the newsletter’s core value as an independent, apolitical and balanced source of critical analysis. I hope to have further updates soon on how that will work in practice, so please bear with me. Exciting times — watch this space!
